Alumni News Update: Silvia Gautama
What are you up to now?
I am currently working at PT OpenTrolley Bookstore, a leading online bookstore in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia which supplying imported books to schools and universities (including BINUS). I am also a volunteer at KataKetik as a typist to provide subtitles/captions for deaf community in Indonesia to ensure they have the same access to information.
Why did you choose to pursue English Literature?
I pursued English Literature as I enjoy learning language and culture. I believe having degree from English Literature will broaden your perspective and it will lead to more opportunities in the future.
What do you miss the most from your university life in BINUS University’s English Department?
I miss attending classes and having discussions with lecturers. I love how close the lecturers with students. We are welcomed to stop by at the lecturers’ office and we can ask many questions or guidance which you may not be able to get at work. At work, you are expected to do your job well with little to no guidance. Even after graduation, the lecturers are still in touch with alumni.
Advise for prospective/current students
Don’t take things for granted, learn as much as you can because you never know that the subjects you hate now will be very useful for your future work. Do not be afraid to try something new and enjoy your university life!
Notes to our beloved English Department
Thank you for the amazing memories which I cherish the most. Thank you for our incredible lecturers that prepared me well for my professional career. I wish all the lecturers and students the best. Please keep up the good work!
