From United States with Ethnography Research Stories
The department welcomed Dr. Laurie Katz of Ohio State University to Kijang campus, Binus university on July 22, 2026. Dr. Katz explored and discussed ethnography as a methodology to get “thick” data from the field on a seminar conducted especially for and with Creative Digital English and Primary Teacher Education’s faculty members.

The one-day hybrid seminar was attended by most of our faculty and a few students who learned from Dr. Katz’s experiences in planning, in collecting data, and in analyzing data of an ethnography study. Dr. Katz was not the only speaker in the event. Our very own Prof. Clara also shared her experience in doing an auto-ethnography study — another branch of ethnography methodology. She highlighted her thought and writing processes in producing one of her most cited articles. You can learn more of her study here: https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3231848.3231871

Moderated by Dr. Paramita Ayuningtyas, the interactive session lasted for two hours and ended with the majority of us feeling intrigued with the method. Thanks for sharing, Dr. Katz! #gobucks
