Workshop on ” Language Learning through Technology: A Changing Direction”
Our Binusian 2016 welcomed Ms. Finita Dewi, a professional national and international – scale trainer, to “Language Learning through Technology: A Changing Direction ” workshop on Monday, June 1st. Finita talked about the current phenomena on the dying trend of Information Technology consumption ( Web 1.0 ) and the rising trend of talk-back Information Technology tools ( web 2.0) in language learning.
In the session, Finita expertly divided the 2 – hour session into a short public lecture and a workshop. In the lecture, she shared some popular applications in language learning, how they are used and how they have helped language learners around the world. She turned the discussion into an interactive one. She strongly suggested that foreign language learners to change the ways that they learn by starting to adopt technology or they would risk failure.
The second part of the session was even more interesting. Students were introduced to two applications that they could use as means to create stories in digital forms, Cartoon Story maker and Screen O Matic, and were made to work in group of 4 to 6. The challenge was to create a project from one of the applications.
The session was ended by students having to present their project ideas. And what a remarkable collection of ideas it was by our students!
We wish to thank Ms. Finita Dewi for such an interesting and insightful presentation. [irf]
