Functions 2.

Following on from the first post about functions, here is another set of language functions for you to consider:

Asking for something.

The most important thing here is to add please at the end of your statement.

Remember also that you are asking a question, so use rising intonation.

A very polite way to ask for something is to use would you mind +ing…

Examples:

  • Could I get by, please?
  • Would you mind changing the meeting next week?

 

Asking for permission.

Use:

  • May…?
  • Do you mind if…?
  • Is it alright if…?

Examples:

  • May I get your email address?
  • Do you mind if I use this computer?
  • Is it alright if I sit here?
