A new trend in research is to ask the question: How important are holidays for workers? Well, the good news is that research seems to suggest that holidays are good for everyone! The video below even suggests that if you do not take a holiday from work every year, you have a 37% greater chance of dying. A company in New Zealand has recently announced that it is offering its employees the chance to choose a four day work week (yes – they will still be paid for five days). The company claims that productivity is just as high and even higher because employees are fresh and feel less jaded after an extensive rest.

It is indeed true that the rationale for a traditional Monday – Friday 9:00-17:00 working routine is becoming less and less relevant. It is part of the Industrial Age. With modern communications networks and the capacity of ICT in today’s world, perhaps we should reconsider the old fashioned work/ life balance dichotomy. What do you think?
